Common causes we actually see
When a burner clicks but won't light, it's almost always one of these:
- A dirty or wet burner cap and igniter. Boil-overs, grease, and cleaning water sit right where the spark needs a clean path. This is the single most common reason — and often the cheapest to fix. (We've had customers whose range stopped lighting right after cleaning it.)
- A clogged burner port. Food debris blocks the gas at the exact spot the spark fires, so "gas comes out but it won't light up."
- A worn or cracked spark igniter / electrode. The ceramic electrode chips or the tip corrodes and the spark gets weak or wanders. WB24X21192 and WB18X31213 are among the parts we replace most on stove and oven jobs.
- A failing spark module. One module fires all the burners. When it goes, you'll often hear "a clicking sound again" — sometimes across several burners at once, or even continuously.
- The igniter that won't stop clicking — even when off. We regularly see "even if it's turned off, the igniter keeps clicking." That's a shorted switch or a spark module holding the circuit closed — worth fixing promptly because it can spark unburned gas.
- Misaligned burner cap. A cap knocked out of position after cleaning breaks the spark gap. Reseating it sometimes solves it outright.
The usual fix
We start by cleaning and drying the burner head, cap, and electrode, then clearing the ports. If the spark is still weak, wandering, or dead, we test the electrode, the igniter switch, and the spark module and replace whatever has failed. On multi-burner clicking or a burner that clicks with the knob off, the fix is usually the spark module or a shorted igniter switch.

Honest DIY vs. call-a-pro
Reasonable to try yourself first:
- Turn the burner off and make sure the cooktop has aired out.
- Lift off the burner cap and grate; clean and fully dry the cap and the little igniter electrode next to it (a range that quit right after cleaning is usually just wet).
- Clear the burner ports with a straightened paperclip — gently.
- Reseat the burner cap squarely and try again.
Call a pro when:
- It still clicks with no flame after cleaning and drying — the electrode, switch, or module has likely failed.
- Gas keeps flowing with no flame, or you smell gas — shut the burner off, and if the smell is strong, shut the gas valve and step outside before calling.
- The igniter clicks nonstop, even with every knob off.
- Multiple burners click but none light — that points to the spark module.
