3C on a Samsung dishwasher points at the pump. The control is watching the circulation motor; when the feedback from it doesn't match what was commanded, the cycle stalls and 3C appears.
The symptom people describe is oddly specific, and it's the giveaway:
"Samsung — showing 3C error. Issues with pump. The timer will not go down and the dishwasher freezes after a few minutes."
Model DW80K7050UG.
A timer that stops counting is different from a machine that stops. The programme hasn't been cancelled — it is waiting for a step that never completes, because the water isn't circulating the way the board expects.
What it was
On that unit, our tech's finding was short: circulation pump needs replacement.
The circulation pump is the one that drives water up through the spray arms. It is not the drain pump — a dishwasher has both, and they fail differently:
- Circulation pump fails → water doesn't get sprayed → dishes come out dirty, the cycle stalls, 3C.
- Drain pump fails → water doesn't leave → standing water in the bottom, a drain code instead.

What else produces 3C
Before a pump is condemned, these get checked:
- A wiring or connector fault between the pump and the control board — the pump is fine, the feedback isn't arriving.
- Something jamming the impeller. Glass, a seed, a piece of label. The motor tries, the feedback is wrong, 3C.
- A failing control board, less often. The pump runs, the board can't read it.
A pump that hums without moving water, or one that is silent when it should be running, usually settles the question.
What you can safely do
- Power-cycle at the breaker for a minute. A single 3C that never returns is not a repair.
- Pull the filter assembly in the base of the tub and clear it. Debris that gets past a loaded filter is what reaches the impeller.
- Check the spray arms turn freely and that their holes are not blocked with scale — Bay Area water is hard on them.
- Run a short cycle and listen. You should hear the circulation pump come up to speed shortly after the fill. Silence, or a hum with no water noise, points at the pump.
Call a tech when 3C returns after a power cycle and a clean filter. Replacing a circulation pump means laying the machine over and opening the sump — straightforward for a tech, messy for anyone else.

Frequently asked questions
What does 3C mean on a Samsung dishwasher? 3C is a pump or motor fault. The control watches the circulation motor and expects feedback confirming it is running at the commanded speed; when that feedback is wrong or missing, the cycle stalls and 3C appears. It usually means the circulation pump, its wiring, or something jamming the impeller.
Why does the timer stop counting down on my Samsung dishwasher? Because the programme is waiting for a step that never finishes. The machine has not cancelled the cycle — it is stuck at the point where water should be circulating. That frozen timer alongside 3C is the classic combination.
Is 3C a drain problem? No. A dishwasher has two pumps and they fail differently. The circulation pump drives water up through the spray arms, and when it fails you get dirty dishes and a stalled cycle. The drain pump empties the tub, and when that fails you get standing water and a drain code instead.
Can I fix a Samsung 3C error myself? Try a power cycle at the breaker and clean the filter assembly in the base of the tub, then run a short cycle and listen for the circulation pump coming up to speed after the fill. If 3C returns, the pump needs testing, and replacing one means laying the machine over and opening the sump.
What fixed the 3C error on the Samsung in your records? A circulation pump replacement, on a DW80K7050UG. The customer reported the timer freezing a few minutes into the cycle, which is what sent our tech straight to the pump.
