OE on an LG washer means the machine could not get the water out in the time it expects. The cycle stops, the door stays locked, and the clothes sit in a tub of water.
This is the error code we see more than any other on washing machines. OE comes up on 39 jobs in our repair records, running from 2021 right through to this year, across 344 LG washer jobs in total.
How customers describe it:
"Displaying OE error code. Tried to manually unclog the drain via bottom tube but very little water is coming out. Turned off machine and tried drain and spin and still getting error. Clothes are soaking wet."
"Not draining properly. Error code OE. Cleaned out drain filter. No luck. Same code mid-cycle. Buzzing noise coming from area."
The thing most pages won't tell you
Every guide for OE starts with "clean the drain pump filter." It is good advice and you should do it. But it is worth knowing what happened on our jobs after customers did exactly that.
They had already cleaned the filter. It had not fixed it.
One tech's note says it plainly: "Drain pump is loud and doesn't let any water drain. Found debris in the filter but even after clearing pump still had issues. Need to replace the drain pump. Drain pump has been replaced, washer drains well."
Debris in the filter was real — and still not the fault.
That pattern repeats through our OE jobs. The customers who called us were, almost without exception, the ones who had drained the drum by hand, pulled the filter, cleared the hose, and got OE again on the next cycle. By the time OE survives a filter clean, the pump itself is usually what's finished.
The tell: listen before you look
The single most useful signal in our notes is noise.
- "Buzzing noise coming from area"
- "Drain pump is loud and doesn't let any water drain"
- "Drain pump makes noise. Might need to replace drain pump"
A pump that is merely blocked is usually quiet or strains briefly. A pump that buzzes, hums or grinds while nothing moves is a pump whose impeller is broken or whose motor is failing. That noise is the difference between a fifteen-minute clean and a part.
If it is silent during the drain portion of the cycle — nothing at all, no hum — that points at the pump's power or the control rather than a blockage.
What we actually replaced
The drain pump, on job after job — in two forms across our records: the complete drain pump assembly on some models, and the bare pump that fits a wide range of the WM front-loaders.
One thing worth knowing if you are pricing a repair: the pump assembly LG originally supplied for these machines has since been superseded by a revised version. Order the old one and you will often be shipped the new — it is the same repair, and the newer part is the better one.
One job needed both the pump and the water supply side, because it was throwing OE and FE together: a water inlet valve, the water-level pressure switch and a second inlet valve all went in on the one visit.
The machines this happens to
OE turns up across LG's front-loaders — WM3555HWA, WM3670HVA, WM4270HWA, WM3570HVA, WM4388HS, WM2487HWM, WM2010CW, WM2501HVA, WM8000HVA — but the 24-inch washer-dryer combos are over-represented in our records. The WM3488HW/HS appears on four separate jobs, and the WM3997HWA and WM3431HS on more.
That makes sense. Those are the all-in-one units that go into flats and condos with no laundry room, they run constantly, and their drain path is more compact than a full-size machine's.
If you have a Kenmore, this page is still for you. Kenmore Elite washers whose model number begins 796 are built by LG, run LG's control board, and show the same OE. Four of our OE jobs were Kenmore, including model 796.4116241.
And it is not only washers. LG dishwashers use OE for the same meaning — water not out. We have cleared it on an LDF7551ST and an LDF5545ST, where one customer had already "cleaned filters, replaced the hose but still not draining."
What you can safely check first
Do these in order. They cost nothing and they genuinely do fix some machines.
- Drain the machine by hand. Open the small access panel at the bottom front, put a shallow tray under the drain tube, and let it run out. It will be more water than you expect.
- Pull the pump filter behind the same panel and clear it. Coins, hairpins, bra wires and lint felt all end up there.
- Check the drain hose. Make sure it is not kinked behind the machine, not pushed more than a few inches into the standpipe, and that it rises before it falls — without that high loop the machine siphons and the control gets confused.
- Check the standpipe or disposal. If a sink nearby also drains slowly, the problem is the plumbing, not the washer.
- Run a spin-and-drain cycle. If it empties and OE stays away, the blockage was the whole fault.
Call a tech when OE comes back after all of that, when you hear buzzing or grinding during the drain, or when the pump makes no sound at all.
Is it worth repairing?
Two of our OE customers decided not to. One machine was fifteen years old; another combo unit the customer chose to replace instead. Both were reasonable calls, and our tech said so at the visit rather than selling a pump into a machine with other problems.
A drain pump on a five-to-ten-year-old LG is usually worth doing. On a fifteen-year-old combo with a worn drum bearing, it often isn't — and you should expect a straight answer about which one you have.

Frequently asked questions
What does OE mean on an LG washer? OE is a drain fault. The control board gives the pump a set time to empty the tub; when the water level sensor still reports water at the end of it, the machine stops and displays OE. It means the water is not getting out — it does not tell you why.
I cleaned the filter and OE came back. What now? That is the most common situation in our records, and it usually means the drain pump itself needs replacing rather than clearing. On one of our jobs the tech found real debris in the filter, cleared it, and the washer still would not drain until the pump was changed. Listen while it tries to drain: buzzing, humming or grinding with no water moving points at the pump.
Can I fix an LG OE error myself? Sometimes. Drain the machine through the tube behind the lower access panel, clear the pump filter, straighten the drain hose and make sure it has a high loop, and check that the standpipe or disposal is not blocked. If a drain-and-spin cycle then completes without OE, that was the whole fault.
Why does my LG washer-dryer combo keep showing OE? The 24-inch all-in-one combos are over-represented in our OE jobs — the WM3488 and WM3997 families especially. They have a more compact drain path than a full-size machine and they tend to run far more loads, so lint and debris reach the pump sooner.
My Kenmore washer shows OE — is that the same thing? Yes, if the model number starts with 796. Those Kenmore Elite machines are built by LG on LG's platform and use the same codes and often the same parts. Four of our OE jobs were Kenmore.
Is the whole pump replaced, or just cleaned out? On our OE jobs it was replaced. Depending on the model it is supplied either as a complete drain pump assembly or as the pump on its own, and the assembly LG first used on these machines has since been superseded by a revised version. Whoever quotes you should be working from the model number on the sticker inside the door frame, because the right part varies across the range.
