Bosch Dishwasher E09 Error (Heating)

E09 looks like a heating element fault, but on Bosch dishwashers there is no separate element — the heater is built into the circulation pump.

E09 on a Bosch dishwasher is a heating fault. The water never gets hot enough, so the dishes come out wet and the glasses come out cloudy.

E09 appears on 9 jobs in our dishwasher records, from 2021 to 2025, out of 369 Bosch jobs.

How customers describe it:

"Bosch dishwasher is throwing an E09 error code indicating there may be an issue with the heating element. Dishes are still wet."

"Shows an error code E09, noticing water not getting hot enough to steam or dry quickly when cycle is done."

"It has the E:09 error message, which I believe is the heating element. The symptoms are wet dishes."

The part is not what the code sounds like

Three different customers told us E09 meant "the heating element", because that is what every lookup says. They were right about the symptom and wrong about the part — and the difference matters when you are pricing a repair.

Modern Bosch dishwashers do not have a separate heating element you can swap. There is no exposed coil in the floor of the tub like an older American machine. The heater is a sleeve built into the circulation pump assembly — the pump that drives water up to the spray arms heats it on the way through.

So when the heater fails, the part you need is the pump.

Our tech's note on one job says it in two words: "Heat pump needs to be replaced." What was ordered was a dishwasher circulation pump with the heater in it — one assembly, not two.

That same part appears on three separate E09 jobs in our records. For a nine-job sample, that is as consistent as this data gets.

What that means for you

Two practical consequences:

  1. A quote for E09 will be higher than a quote for "a heating element", because it is a pump-and-heater assembly, not a coil. If someone offers to replace just an element on a current Bosch, ask them to show you which part they mean on your model.
  2. The dishwasher will still wash. The pump circulates; it is only the heating that has failed. You can keep using it on a cold cycle and towel-dry, which buys you time to decide — unlike a drain fault, this one is not going to put water on your floor.

Check this before you order anything

One of our nine jobs is a useful warning. A Gaggenau dishwasher — same platform family — came in with "Not drying, error E 09". The tech's finding: "Hard reset on the unit, went through a couple of cycles, could not replicate the issue."

No part was needed. The code had latched and cleared.

So before anything else:

  1. Power the machine off at the breaker for ten minutes and run a normal cycle.
  2. Check the rinse aid is not empty. Bosch relies on rinse aid for its condensation drying; with the dispenser dry, dishes come out wet even when the heater is fine, and people often go looking for a code to explain it.
  3. Check your hot water. These machines are usually plumbed to the hot supply. If the hot tap at the kitchen sink is slow or lukewarm, the dishwasher is starting from cold every cycle and working much harder to get there.
  4. Run the hottest cycle with no load and feel the door after. Warm is normal; stone cold points at the heater.

If E09 comes back after a reset and your hot water and rinse aid are both fine, it is the pump.

The models we've seen it on

SHX65T55UC, SPV68U53UC, SHE53T55UC, SGV68U53UC, SHPM78W55N, SHE7PT52UC, SHP68T55UC, the Thermador DWHD640JFP and a Gaggenau DF250761.

Thermador and Gaggenau owners: your dishwasher is Bosch-built, uses the same codes, and in our records takes the same repair. One of our E09 jobs was a Thermador where the customer's note reads "displaying an E09 error code related to the heating element" — the same conclusion, the same actual part.

Frequently asked questions

What does E09 mean on a Bosch dishwasher? E09 is a heating fault. The control board expects the water temperature to rise during the cycle and it does not, so it logs E09. The usual symptoms are wet dishes and poor drying rather than a machine that will not run.

Is E09 the heating element? It is the heating, but not a separate element. On current Bosch dishwashers the heater is built into the circulation pump assembly, so the part that gets replaced is the pump with the heater in it. The same assembly went into three of our E09 jobs.

Can I still use the dishwasher with E09? Usually yes. The wash function depends on the circulation pump moving water, which still works; it is the heating that has failed. Expect wet dishes and poor drying, and nothing worse. Unlike a drain or leak code, E09 is not a flooding risk.

My dishes are wet but there's no error code — is that E09 too? Not necessarily. The most common cause of wet dishes on a Bosch with no code is an empty rinse aid dispenser, because these machines dry by condensation rather than with a heated blast of air. Fill the rinse aid first.

Could E09 clear on its own? It can. On one of our jobs a hard reset cleared the code and the machine completed several cycles normally, so no part was fitted. Switch it off at the breaker for ten minutes before you order anything.

What part is the Bosch dishwasher heater? The circulation pump with the heater integrated into it — the same assembly on three of our nine E09 jobs. There is no separate element to buy. Which assembly fits depends on the model, so it should be matched to the rating plate on the edge of your door.
