Why a warm fridge with a cold freezer happens
In most modern refrigerators, there is only one set of cooling coils (the evaporator), and it lives in the freezer. Cold air is made there, then a fan blows a portion of it up into the fresh-food compartment. So when the freezer stays cold but the fridge turns warm, the cold is being made fine — it's just not getting moved into the fridge. That narrows the cause down fast.
The causes we actually see most
1. Failed evaporator fan motor (the #1 culprit). This is the fan that pushes cold air from the freezer coils into the fridge. When it dies or seizes, the freezer stays cold but the fridge goes warm. One customer put it perfectly: "GE — freezer fan has stopped working." A telltale sign is that the fridge feels a bit better right after you open the door (because the compressor and airflow shift) — or a fan that's noisy, clicking, or dead-silent when it should be running. 2. Frost blocking the evaporator coil (a defrost-system failure). If the automatic defrost system fails, frost slowly encases the evaporator coil until air can't pass through it. The freezer may still feel cold, but the fridge starves for airflow and warms up. The failed part is usually the defrost heater, defrost thermostat, or the defrost control board/timer. 3. Stuck or broken damper. A small motorized or manual door (the "damper") controls how much cold air flows into the fridge. If it's stuck shut, the fridge won't cool even though everything else works.
4. Faulty thermistor or control board. The temperature sensor (thermistor) tells the control board how cold the fridge is. If it reads wrong, the board never calls for more cooling. Several customers describe this as "refrigerator temperature is not working properly" or "temperature going up and down."
The usual fix
For a bad evaporator fan, the fix is a straightforward motor replacement. For a frost-choked coil, we perform a full manual defrost, then replace the specific failed defrost component so it doesn't come back. Damper and thermistor issues are part swaps once diagnosed. In the large majority of these jobs, the fridge is cooling normally again the same day.
Honest DIY vs. pro
What you can safely try first:
- Confirm the vents inside the fridge aren't blocked by food or packaging — airflow needs a clear path.
- Check that the fridge isn't overpacked and that the door is sealing fully.
- Listen for the evaporator fan: open the freezer and press the door switch. If it's silent, the fan is a prime suspect.
- Give it 24 hours after any temperature change — one customer noted "adjusted the temperature but it still not cooling," which is a strong sign it's mechanical, not a setting.
Where a pro is worth it: Diagnosing whether it's the fan, the defrost circuit, the damper, or the board requires meter testing and, often, a controlled defrost to see the coil. Replacing an evaporator fan or defrost heater means pulling the freezer's back panel and handling sealed wiring — easy to misdiagnose and swap the wrong (expensive) part.
