First: is it a safety emergency?
Use the smell to judge urgency:
- Strong, persistent "rotten egg" gas smell (present even when the oven is off, or filling the room): Treat it as a leak. Don't flip light switches, don't light anything, don't hunt for the source. Get everyone out and call PG&E (1-800-743-5000) or 911. Utility response is free.
- Faint gas smell only for a few seconds when the oven ignites, then it heats normally: Common and usually a weak or slow igniter letting a little unburned gas escape before the flame catches. Not an emergency, but it's the early stage of a failing part — book a repair.

What actually causes an oven gas smell — the faults we see most

3. The oven smells like gas but won't heat. When gas is flowing but never igniting — often a dead igniter or a safety valve that isn't opening — you get raw gas odor and a cold oven. One customer's oven did exactly this after a recent power outage: gas smell, no heat. Don't keep hitting the ignite/bake button; that just releases more gas.
4. Normal break-in smell (rule this out first). A brand-new oven, or one after self-clean, can smell for the first few uses as manufacturing oils and residue burn off. That fades within a few cycles. A gas/rotten-egg smell that shows up on a stove you've used for years is not break-in.
