Why a microwave runs but won't heat
A microwave makes heat with a single component called the magnetron, fed by a high-voltage circuit (a diode and a capacitor) and protected by thermal cutoffs. Everything else — turntable, light, fan, display — runs off ordinary household voltage. That's why a unit can look perfectly alive and still leave your food cold: the low-voltage side is fine, the high-voltage side isn't. Here's what we actually find:
- A failed magnetron. The #1 cause of no-heat. When it dies, everything else keeps working. A telltale sign customers describe: "it only buzzes and doesn't heat" or "a loud humming noise, and items placed inside are not heating up." That hum is often a magnetron or high-voltage diode on its way out. If yours is making a loud humming or buzzing noise, that's frequently the same root cause.
- A blown high-voltage diode or capacitor. These feed the magnetron. A failed diode is a classic no-heat cause and often the cheaper of the two to replace.
- A tripped or failed thermal cutoff / thermoprotector. A safety device that opens if the magnetron overheats. Sometimes it's protecting a real problem; sometimes it's just failed.
- A door interlock "monitor" switch. If the switches don't confirm the door is fully closed, the board runs the display and fan but won't fire the magnetron — no heat, no error. We've seen this on units where "everything functions except the heating."
- A control-board or relay fault that never energizes the high-voltage transformer.
Sometimes it shows up as a code: one GE owner told us the unit "is not heating and after a few seconds displays F1E6 on the screen." We diagnose those against manufacturer service documentation plus what we've actually seen on the bench.
The usual fix
No-heat is one of the more diagnosable microwave faults because the failure is isolated to the high-voltage circuit. A tech safely discharges the capacitor, then tests the magnetron, diode, capacitor, thermal fuses, and door switches in sequence. In most of our 94 no-heat jobs the answer is a magnetron replacement or a high-voltage diode replacement — sometimes both, since a failing magnetron can take the diode with it.

DIY vs. calling a pro — the honest version
Worth a 30-second check first: make sure you didn't accidentally set a low power level (Power 3, defrost, etc.) or a timer-only/kitchen-timer mode — both make a microwave count down without heating. Reset it and run a cup of water for one minute. If the water is still cold, it's a hardware fault.
And here's where we're blunt: do not open a microwave to work on the heating circuit yourself. The high-voltage capacitor stores a charge that can be lethal even with the microwave unplugged. Magnetrons on older units can also contain materials you don't want to disturb. Testing a magnetron or diode means working millimeters from that capacitor, which is exactly why "not heating" is one of our busiest microwave calls. A tech discharges it safely and has the right meter and parts — this is genuinely not a DIY repair.
