Why the freezer quits but the fridge stays cold
In most household refrigerators, one set of cold-making parts serves both compartments — the freezer gets cold first, then a fan and a damper push some of that cold air over to the fridge. Because of how that airflow is arranged, certain failures hit the freezer hardest while the fridge coasts along on residual cold for a while longer. That's why you so often see the freezer fail first and alone — one of our customers put it plainly: "freezer not working, not freezing, fridge works."
Common causes we actually see
From our real freezer jobs, a "not freezing / not cold enough" freezer usually comes down to one of these:
- Evaporator fan motor failure — the fan that blows cold air over the coil dies, so the freezer can't circulate cold even though the compressor is running. Very common on freezer-not-freezing calls.
- Iced-over evaporator coil (defrost failure) — frost buries the coil so air can't pass through it. This overlaps heavily with our frost-buildup jobs; the freezer effectively insulates itself.
- Start relay or compressor problem — if the compressor won't start or run, nothing gets cold. One recall job in our data traced all the way to a compressor issue after the freezer "does not freeze."
- Failed cold-control thermostat or main control board — the freezer never gets the signal to run at freezing temps. One customer's freezer "blows air but no cold."
- Low refrigerant / sealed-system leak — the compressor runs but there's no cold to make. A customer literally asked if it was the "Freon."
- Dirty condenser coils — coils packed with dust make the system work too hard to hit freezing temps; sometimes a cleaning plus a part is all it takes.
Because several of these look identical from the outside (freezer warm, fridge fine), the diagnosis matters far more than the guess.
The usual fix
We start by reading the actual freezer temperature and checking whether the compressor and evaporator fan are running, then narrow it down:
- Replace a dead evaporator fan motor
- Full defrost + repair the defrost circuit if the coil is iced over
- Replace a bad start relay, cold-control thermostat, or main control board
- Diagnose the sealed system / compressor and recharge or repair if it's a refrigerant issue
- Clean condenser coils and confirm proper airflow
Many of these are same-visit repairs. The important part is confirming the true cause — one of our customers had a compressor replaced and it still didn't cool, which is exactly what happens when the wrong part gets swapped. We diagnose before we replace.

- Turn the freezer to its coldest setting and give it a few hours — occasionally it's just a settings or door-ajar issue.
- Keep the door shut as much as possible to hold whatever cold remains.
- Move critical food to a cooler with ice, or borrow freezer space from a neighbor.
- Vacuum the condenser coils (usually behind or beneath the unit) — dirty coils are an easy, safe DIY win.
- Don't unplug and re-plug repeatedly — that can be hard on a struggling compressor.
DIY vs. calling a pro
Reasonable to try yourself: checking the temperature dial, confirming the door seals, clearing vents inside the freezer, and cleaning the condenser coils.
Call a pro when: the freezer still won't reach freezing after a settings check and coil cleaning; you can hear the compressor clicking on and off or not running; there's ice fully covering the back panel; or the freezer "blows air but no cold." Evaporator fans, control boards, start relays, and sealed-system work all require testing under power and refrigerant-certified handling — not a safe or economical DIY. And time matters here: every hour a full freezer sits warm is food at risk.
