Dryer troubleshooting
Dryer Taking Too Long to Dry? Here's Why
When a dryer needs two or three cycles, it's almost always airflow. A clogged vent traps moisture and wastes energy — and it's a fire risk.
Common causes
Clogged dryer vent
You can checkLint buildup in the vent run is the #1 cause of slow drying — and the leading cause of dryer fires.
Blocked lint screen
You can checkA film from dryer sheets clogs the screen and chokes airflow even when it looks clean.
Weak heating element
Pro repairA partially failed element produces some heat but not enough to dry efficiently.
Failing blower or thermostat
Pro repairA worn blower wheel or cycling thermostat reduces airflow and temperature.
What you can check yourself
- Clean the lint screen and wash it with soap and water to remove film.
- Disconnect and clear the vent hose and the outside vent of lint.
- Confirm strong, warm airflow at the outside vent while running.
- Avoid overloading — give clothes room to tumble.
When to call a pro
If the vent and screen are clean and it's still slow, the element, blower, or thermostat is weakening — we'll restore full airflow and heat.
Most dryer repairs run $110–$400 — see our repair cost guide.
