Samsung Washer 4E Error (Water Supply Fault)

Samsung 4E (or 4C) means the washer didn't fill in time. Most of the time it's the inlet screens, not the machine — here's how to check in ten minutes, and when it's really a valve.

4E means your Samsung washer asked for water and didn't get enough of it in time. On newer models the same fault shows as 4C. The machine fills for a set period, checks the level, and if the tub isn't where it should be, it stops and posts the code.

Here is the honest part, and it's why this page is short on drama: most 4E faults are not the washing machine. They are the water getting to it. We'd rather you spend ten minutes checking that than pay for a service call you didn't need.

Samsung is a brand we see plenty of — 147 Samsung washer jobs in our records — so we also know the cases where it really is the machine.

How it shows up for customers:

"Code 4E, soap residue on clothes, self-cleaning not working. Are all these problems due to water flow? Also the belts look old."

"Stackable washer and dryer — Samsung washer has a 4E error code."

That first one is the giveaway: poor rinsing and 4E together almost always means the machine is getting water, but not enough of it.

Check these first — in this order

  1. Both taps fully open. Hot and cold. A tap that was knocked half closed behind the machine is the single most common cause.
  2. The inlet hoses aren't kinked where the washer was pushed back against the wall.
  3. The inlet filter screens. This is the one almost nobody checks. Turn off the taps, unscrew the hoses at the back of the washer, and look into the valve ports — there's a fine mesh screen in each. Bay Area water leaves scale and grit on them. Pick the screens out with needle-nose pliers, rinse them, put them back.
  4. Hoses on the right ports. If hot and cold are swapped, cycles that call for cold can post 4E.
  5. Run a rinse cycle and watch. If it fills normally now, you're done.

If 4E comes back after all five, the fault is inside the machine.

When it really is the washer

Then we're looking at the water inlet valve — the solenoid pair that opens to let water in. It fails in two ways: electrically dead (no water at all) or stuck partly closed (slow fill, which is why clothes come out with detergent still on them).

On one of our Samsung jobs — a WA45H7000AW/A2 — the customer reported 4E plus soap residue plus a self-clean cycle that wouldn't finish. The valves were sticking, and the motor was on its way out too.

On another, a stacked Samsung pair, the washer posted 4E and we found nothing wrong with it — the fault was transient and the real problem was the dryer alongside it. We say so because it's worth knowing: a single 4E that never returns isn't necessarily a repair.

Less often, a blocked or kinked pressure/level hose makes the board misread the water level, so it posts 4E even though water went in.

Frequently asked questions

What does 4E mean on a Samsung washer? 4E is a water supply error: the washer ran its fill for the expected time and the water level never reached where it should be. On newer Samsung models the same fault displays as 4C. It points at the water getting to the machine far more often than at the machine itself.

Is 4E the same as 4C on a Samsung washer? Yes. Samsung changed the display on newer models, but 4E and 4C are the same water supply fault and have the same causes and the same checks.

How do I fix a Samsung 4E error myself? Check both taps are fully open, make sure neither inlet hose is kinked, then shut the taps off and unscrew the hoses at the back of the washer to clean the fine mesh screens in the valve ports. Those screens collect scale and grit and are the most commonly missed cause. Refit, run a rinse cycle and watch it fill.

My Samsung washer fills slowly and leaves detergent on the clothes — is that 4E? Often yes. A slow fill means the machine is getting some water but not enough, so the cycle runs short of water and the detergent never rinses out. That is usually clogged inlet screens or a water inlet valve that is sticking part way open.

Does a 4E error always mean a repair? No. On one Samsung job in our records the washer posted 4E and we found nothing wrong with it — the code did not come back. A single 4E that clears and never returns is not necessarily a fault. A 4E that returns on every cycle after you have cleaned the inlet screens is.
