Miele Dishwasher F24 Error (Heating or Drain?)

F24 points at the heating relay — but on the one Miele job where we have the tech's finding, it was a clog. Check the drain before you buy a relay.

F24 on a Miele dishwasher is read almost everywhere as a heating fault — the element or its relay. That is what the customers who called us had been told, and it is what they told us.

F24 appears on 5 jobs in our dishwasher records, from 2023 to 2025, out of 77 Miele dishwasher jobs.

How customers describe it:

"Shows error F24 (heating element?)"

"Has fault F24 indicating an issue with the heating element or relay."

"F24 error code — heating relay."

Three customers, three arrivals at the same conclusion. And then there is what our tech actually found.

The one job where we know the outcome

On a Miele G 6885 SCVi showing F24, the tech's note reads:

"Removed the clog and cleaned the filter and drainage line. Tested a quick wash cycle and had no issues."

No relay. No heating element. A clog.

One job is one job, and we are not going to pretend five records make a law. But it is the only one of the five where we have the tech's finding written down, and it points somewhere nobody expected — which makes it worth more than a confident paragraph repeating the manual.

The practical advice: before anyone orders a heating relay for your Miele, have the drain and the filters checked. It is the cheaper thing, it is quicker, and on our job it was the answer.

Why a drain problem can surface as a heating code

This is not as strange as it sounds, and another of our five jobs shows the mechanism.

That job's note lists two codes together: "F14 circulation pump, F24 pressure switch."

F24 is tied to a pressure switch reading. The control board does not measure water temperature in isolation — it works from how much water is in the tub and whether the circulation pump is moving it properly. A machine that cannot drain or circulate correctly presents the control with readings that do not add up, and the fault it posts can land on the heating side of the logic.

So the chain runs: blocked drain or filter → water not where the machine expects → pressure switch reading wrong → a code that looks like heating.

Clear the blockage, and the "heating fault" goes away. Which is what happened on ours.

When it genuinely is the relay

None of this means the heating relay never fails. One of our five jobs recorded "relay 0419" on a G 6365 SCVi, and another was a fifteen-year-old machine whose note simply reads "F24 error code — heating relay."

Miele dishwashers run far longer than most, and a relay is a component with a finite number of switching cycles. On a machine that age it is entirely plausible.

The order to work in:

  1. Drain, filter and circulation path — cheap, fast, and what fixed ours.
  2. Confirm the water is actually not heating — run a hot cycle and feel the door and the dishes. If they are hot, the heating is fine and the code is reporting something upstream.
  3. Then the relay or the heating circuit, on a machine old enough to have earned it.

What you can safely check

  1. Lift out the filter assembly in the floor of the tub — on Miele it is a cylinder you turn and lift, with a flat screen beneath. Rinse both under a hot tap.
  2. Check the drain. Run the sink and the disposal; if they are slow, that is your lead.
  3. Check the spray arms turn freely and their holes are not blocked with scale. Miele arms unclip for rinsing.
  4. Run a hot cycle and feel the dishes at the end. Hot dishes with an F24 means the heating works and something else is being reported.
  5. Power off at the mains for ten minutes, then try again.

Call a tech when F24 returns after the filters and drain are clear, or when the dishes come out genuinely cold at the end of a hot cycle.

Frequently asked questions

What does F24 mean on a Miele dishwasher? F24 is generally documented as a heating fault, tied to the heating relay or circuit. In practice it is derived from a pressure switch reading rather than a direct temperature measurement, which is why a water-movement problem can produce it.

Is F24 always the heating relay? Not in our records. On the one F24 job where we have the tech's finding, the fix was removing a clog and cleaning the filter and drainage line — a quick wash cycle afterwards ran with no issues and no part was fitted. The relay does fail, especially on older machines, but it is not the place to start.

Why would a blocked drain cause a heating error? Because the control board works from how much water is in the tub and whether it is circulating properly, via a pressure switch, rather than measuring temperature in isolation. A blockage gives it readings that do not add up, and the code it posts can land on the heating side of its logic. One of our jobs listed F24 alongside a circulation pump fault, which shows the connection.

What should I check before paying for a Miele repair? The filter cylinder and screen in the floor of the tub, whether your sink and disposal drain freely, and whether the spray arms turn and are not blocked with scale. Then run a hot cycle and feel the dishes at the end — if they are hot, the heating is working and the code is reporting something else.

Is an older Miele dishwasher worth repairing? Usually, yes. Miele machines are built to run far longer than most, and one of our F24 jobs was on a fifteen-year-old unit that was still worth attending to. A relay or a heating circuit on a machine with that much life left in the mechanics is a reasonable repair.

Which Miele models have you seen F24 on? The G 6885 SCVi, G 6365 SCVi and G 6105 SCU, across Miele's integrated and compact built-in range.
