Daikin is the world's largest HVAC manufacturer and one of the companies that pioneered the inverter, variable-speed technology behind modern ductless systems. In the U.S. it also owns Goodman and Amana, so its reach runs from premium ductless heat pumps to value-brand furnaces. Most Bay Area homeowners know Daikin for its ductless mini-splits — the slim wall units that heat and cool a room without ductwork, a popular fix for older East Bay and Peninsula homes, Eichlers, and additions with nowhere to run ducts. Triton services Daikin ductless and inverter systems across the East Bay, Tri-Valley, and Peninsula, and we keep common parts on hand so most repairs are a single visit.

A note on Bay Area installs: ductless is comparatively simple to hang, so a lot of systems were put in by a handyman or as a DIY kit and never quite dialed in — a marginal flare connection, a low refrigerant charge, or a shortcut in the comm wiring. Those tend to surface as a fault a year or two later, and setting them right is licensed-tech work, since refrigerant handling is EPA-regulated. We fix the install as much as the failure.

Systems we repair

  • Single-zone mini-splits — one outdoor condenser paired to one indoor head.
  • Multi-zone systems — one outdoor unit feeding several indoor heads, sometimes through a branch box.
  • Inverter ducted systems — Daikin's concealed, ducted air handlers (including Daikin Fit and slim-duct units) that use the same inverter technology as the ductless line.
  • Heat pumps — every Daikin system here is a heat pump, so it both heats and cools from one unit.

Common Daikin problems we fix

  • U4 communication fault. The indoor and outdoor units stop talking to each other — often the interconnecting comm wiring, a control board, or feedback from a failing outdoor fan or compressor. One of the most common Daikin faults we're called for.
  • U0 low refrigerant. A refrigerant shortage, usually from a slow leak at a flare or coil, leaves the unit running but barely heating or cooling. This one matters: running an inverter compressor low on refrigerant risks damaging it, so a U0 should be diagnosed promptly rather than ignored.
  • A5 pressure / freeze protection. The system trips on a freeze-up or high-pressure condition to protect itself — typically a dirty filter, low airflow, a dirty coil, or low refrigerant. The unit shuts down cooling until the condition clears.
  • Drain / condensate faults. A clogged drain line or a failed condensate pump backs water up; the head stops cooling to keep it from spilling down your wall.
  • Not cooling or not heating. Weak output, short-cycling, or a unit that starts and then stops — the umbrella symptoms the codes above usually explain.
  • Blinking-light codes. A blink pattern on the indoor unit's LEDs flags a stored fault; reading it correctly is the first step, and control-board or sensor faults behind it need a tech.

Daikin error & fault codes

Daikin mini-splits report faults as 2-character alphanumeric codes (a letter plus a digit) on the wired or wireless remote, and as a blink pattern on the indoor unit's operation or timer LED. On many models you press the remote's inspection/cancel button to make the stored code appear. As a rule of thumb, U codes are system, refrigerant, or communication faults (U4 comm, U0 low refrigerant), and A codes point to the indoor unit and its protections (A5 freeze/high-pressure). For the full list and DIY-safe airflow and drain checks, see our Daikin code guide:

Blink patterns and code letters can vary by model, so confirm any code against the label inside the indoor unit or the installation manual before assuming a part has failed.

What it costs in the Bay Area

Daikin ductless repairs depend on the part and whether refrigerant is involved. In our pricing, a capacitor runs about $130–$400 and a condensate pump or drain repair $110–$350 — the common, lower-cost fixes behind a drain fault or a weak fan. A control or comms board is roughly $220–$700 (the usual cure for a persistent U4 that isn't just wiring), and a refrigerant leak repair and recharge runs $180–$700 — the real fix for a U0, since simply topping off a leaking system is illegal to vent and only buys time. Most Daikin mini-split repairs land in the $129–$900 range. We charge a diagnostic fee that's credited toward the repair when you approve the work, and you always get a flat, upfront price before we start.

Frequently asked questions

What does U4 mean on my Daikin mini-split? U4 is a communication fault between the indoor and outdoor units — they've stopped talking. It's often the interconnecting comm wiring, a control board, or feedback from a failing outdoor fan or compressor. Because it can involve the boards and the outdoor unit, U4 is a tech diagnosis rather than a DIY fix.

What does U0 mean, and can low refrigerant damage my Daikin? U0 flags a refrigerant shortage, almost always from a slow leak at a flare or a coil. It matters because running an inverter compressor low on refrigerant can damage it, so a U0 shouldn't be ignored or just topped off. The real fix is finding and repairing the leak, then recharging to spec — licensed-tech work under EPA rules.

What is an A5 code on a Daikin mini-split? A5 is a freeze-up or high-pressure protection trip: the unit shuts down cooling to protect itself, typically because of a dirty filter, low airflow, a dirty coil, or low refrigerant. Start by checking and cleaning the filter; if it keeps tripping after that, it needs a tech to check airflow and the refrigerant charge.

Does Daikin make Goodman, and is Daikin a good brand? Yes — Daikin is the world's largest HVAC manufacturer and owns both Goodman and Amana in the U.S. Daikin itself sits at the premium, inverter end of the market and is well regarded for ductless and variable-speed systems, with a broad parts supply behind it, which generally makes a single-part repair worthwhile.

How much does Daikin mini-split repair cost in the Bay Area? It depends on the part. A capacitor is about $130–$400 and a condensate pump or drain repair $110–$350; a control or comms board runs $220–$700, and a refrigerant leak repair and recharge $180–$700. Most repairs land in the $129–$900 range. The diagnostic fee is credited toward the repair when you approve the work.

Do you repair multi-zone Daikin systems, and do you serve my city? Yes — we service both single-zone and multi-zone Daikin setups, including systems that feed several heads through a branch box, plus inverter ducted systems. We cover the East Bay, Tri-Valley, and Peninsula, including Dublin, San Mateo, Pleasanton, Redwood City, and San Ramon. Call (888) 993-5699 to book.
